The Vieux Carre
Line:
RTA bus #3 is a small replica of the St. Charles Avenue streetcar. It ferries
passangers around the French Quarter, the Faubourg Marigny, and the Central Business
District
roughly every 15 minutes.
Cars:
Though the French Quarter and the Central
Business District (CBD) are fairly compact,
exploring other parts of the city is best
done by car.
Rental Cars:
Are plentiful in the Central Business District,
as well as at Louis Armstrong International
Airport, or simly reserve online; click
here >>
Parking:
Parking in the French Quarter and the CBD
is rarely easy. Bring plenty of quartes
for meters, and read all posted signs.
Some areas without meters allow free two-hour
parking without a residential pass.
Parking Meters:
The city has recently installed new computerized
parking meters in various areas of the
French Quarter and CBD. One meter per block
covers all the spaces on that block. The
meters accept currency or credit cards..
Once time is purchased, the meter issues
a receipt with an expiration time printed
at the bottom. Drivers then take the ticket
back to their car to display the receipt
where it can be seen by parking enforcement
officers. Detailed directions are printed
on each meter.
Warning:
New Orleans parking enforcement officers
(meter maids) have a reputation for ruthlessness
and brook no excuses.
Towing:
If your car is towed, call 504-565-7450.
The auto pound is located at 400 N. Claiborne
Avenue. Fees are steep, bring cash or credit
card and picture ID.
Ferries:
A ferry (free for pedestrians; $1.00 for
cars from the West Bank to the foot of
Canal Street) has been crossing the Mississippi
river from Canal street to Algiers Point
since 1827. It runs every 15 minutes until
midnight.
Streetcars:
New
Orleans' famous streetcars (don't call them trolleys!) are also operated by the
RTA. There are three lines,
all of which connect on Canal street.
Standard fare is $1.25; a VisiTour pass
is $5.00 for one day; $12.00 for three
days.
St. Charles Line:
The streetcar leaves from the corner of Canal and Carondolet streets.
This 13.2 mile route traverses the Central Business District, the Garden District,
and Uptown, turning onto Carrollton Avenue. Along the way, you will see graceful
antebellum mansions and Tulane and Loyola universities. To explore Audubon Park
and Audubon Zoo, disembark at stop 36.
Riverfront Line:
Running from the lower French Quarter to the foot of Canal street along
the Mississippi river, this 1.8 mile route was opened in 1988 and has proven
popular with visitors.
Canal Line:
This line, opened in 2004, connects with St. Charles and Riverfront
lines. Some Canal streetcars (marked "City Park") take the"spur" down
Carrollton Avenue to the New Orleans Museum of Art and City Park; others (marked "Cemeteries")
continue to the end of Canal Street.
Taxicabs:
Taxis
are plentiful in New Orleans, particularly
around the French Quarter and the Central
Business District. You'll also find cabs
lined up in front of major hotels. Fares
in New Orleans are; $2.50 for the first
1/8 mile, and 20 cents for each 1/8 mile
thereafter, or for each 40 seconds of "standing
time". A flat fee of $1.00 is charged for
each additional passenger, as well as $1.00
per carload for fuel surcharge.

on a ride to/from Louis Armstrong New Orleans
International Airport to/from any location
